2. | Comparison of Lichtenstein and Darn Repair Techniques in Terms of Recurrence Ömer Parlak Pages 81 - 83
Between the years 2004 and 2008, the file records of 121 patients with inguinal hernia, who were operated on by the same surgeon with Lichtenstein and darn repair techniques in three state hospitals, were retrospectively compared in terms of relapse. Of these, 61 patients were operated with the darn repair technique, while 60 patients underwent hernia repair with the Lichtenstein technique. When the patients were evaluated in terms of postoperative recurrence, no difference was found between two groups. Also, the darn repair technique was considered more economical as no meshes were used. |

3. | Surgery for Lipomas should not be Estimated as Simple as Their Name Implies Mehmet Oğuz Yenidünya Pages 84 - 89
This study presents 65 cases with soft tissue tumors. Their histopathological examinations revealed lipomas. Clinically the tumor was located superficially in 26 cases. In 33 patients, the tumor was located deeper. In other words, its was located in either the submuscular or subfascial plane.Lipomatosis was diagnosed in seven cases and lipodystrophic syndrome in five cases. One case with right maxillary enlargement was diagnosed as intraosseous lipoma following its partial resection. The lipomas in lipomatosis cases and lipodystrophic cases were superficially located, yet they were not considered as simple and encapsulated lipomas becasue their resections were not as simple as those of the latter. The emphasis was on the knowledge of the existence of submuscular and subfascial lipomas so that no surgical time was wasted on the superficial adipose tissue to look for the mass. Although it was not difficult to resect the lipomas in superficially located cases, it is believed that liposuction is not a proper treatment for the lipomas seen in the syndromic lipomatosis cases. |

4. | In Vivo Anticancer Activities of Vanillin Thiosemicarbazone Complexes with Co(II) and Ni(II) Sha M. S. Shahriar, S. M.M. Ali, M. Jesmin Pages 90 - 97
The anticancer activities of vanillin thiosemicarbazone complexes with Co(II) and Ni(II) have been studied against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) cells in Swiss albino mice. Both the complexes were administrated into the intraperitoneal cavity of the EAC-inoculated mice at two doses (5 and 7.5 mg/kg i.p.). The anticancer activities were studied by monitoring the parameters such as cell growth inhibition, tumor weight measurement, survival time of EAC-bearing mice, as well as the changes in depleted hematological parameters due to tumorigenesis. All data were compared with those of a known standard drug bleomycin at the dose of 0.3 mg/kg (i.p.). It has been found that these complexes significantly increased the life span of tumor-bearing mice and decreased the rate of growth and weight of tumor cells. They also restored modestly the depleted hematological parameters such as hemoglobin content, RBC count, and WBC count to normal. They enhanced the number of macrophages in normal mice with minor host toxicity. It is concluded that these compounds can be primarily considered as potent anticancer agents. |

5. | Approach to Pneumothorax in Emergency Department Mahmut Tokur, Mehmet Ergin, Mustafa Demiröz, Muhammed Sayan, Hüseyin Arpağ Pages 98 - 107
Pneumothorax is the collection of air in the pleural space. Most of these patients are admitted to emergency services first. If pneumothorax is left untreated, it can progress to a life-threatening clinical condition. All emergency physicians must have a detailed knowledge about it and its treatment. |

8. | Osteoid Osteoma with Double Nidus Mahmut N. Aytekin, Mehmet A.E. Aksekili, Hakan Atalar, Okan Ateş, Kasım Kılıçarslan, Mahmut Uğurlu Pages 115 - 116
Osteoid osteoma is a benign bone tumor composed of a central zone called nidus, which is an atypical bone completely enclosed within a well-vascularized stroma and a peripheral sclerotic reaction zone (1). Its etiology and pathogenesis are unknown (1). This study reports the case of a 22-year-old male patient with dull pain below his right knee with osteoid osteoma, who was operated and his pains passed away. |
